…never cost so much.
this is “jinx” the cat, a hand-beaded, austrian crystal minaudier by judith leiber, matriarch of expensively cute, crystalized clutches. don’t like cats? perhaps you’d like ganesh close at hand instead? (are any of my friends suprised the last one is my favorite?) a jew born in 1921 in budapest, hungary, judith managed to escape the holocaust. eventually, she fell in love with and married gerson leiber, an american soldier, and arrived in the united states in 1948. she finally started her own business in 1963 after working for other handbag companies. the luxury institute named judith leiber “the most prestigious luxury handbag” for the second year in a row in september 2008.
while leiber does offer more “classic” evening bags, pieces in the “novelty” category as these are only available for a limited time, and thus become highly sought-after collectibles after they are discontinued – a red ribbon-topped yorkie, a colorful parrot in repose, a reclining jaguar, a seated camel, and a pink and silver cupcake are only a few of the other pieces currently available. past works include a poodle, red apple, polar bear, jumping dolphin, gold-eyed frog, red-breasted robin, the snake below, and a black and silver owl.
