first caught wind of curator lucy chadwick about 4 years ago. still crushin’.

60’s illustrations.

since i had to be alive in the 1960‘s for this to be “nostalgia” for me, i’m not quite sure how to define my admiration for these stylish vintage illustrations by andy virgil and robert mcginnis

white linen night in the heights – 2013.

i’m so glad i stumbled across news about white linen night in the heights, and doubly pleased to find out my friend julie was an event veteran!

with her as my guide, she and two additional friends of mine, michelle + justin, sashayed our way up and down white oak dr in the houston heights. we perused art, imbibed, and sampled home-made treats, including some very tasty BBQ courtesy of newly minted oak leaf smokehouse.

a great crowd and good food made for a grand ‘ol time.

(…once again, apologies for the reliance on a cell phone camera!)

one-upped.

thought you were being so green – recycling, composting and commuting on your bicycle?

well, you’ve been one-upped, unless you’re already riding one of THESE…

The Interceptor – Detail.

these handmade, fully utilitarian beauties are the work of Bill Holloway and Mauro Hernandez of Masterworks Wood & Design,  based in San Jose, California. each frame is carved from “urban lumber” or “salvaged timber”; wood from dying trees in cities or wood from buildings or other structures that are being torn down. Each bike is made-to-order, can be 8 ft long and weigh from 45 to 70 lbs and have been fully tested to “take a beating”. all stains, sealants and other finishes, which are applied by hand, are also animal, people and Eco-friendly.

Bespoke Global, which sources and sells hand-made pieces by carefully curated artisans, also sell these tandem two-wheeled sculptures through their website. so, just when you were pleased as local, organic home-squeezed punch about your love for mother earth, mother said, “you can always do better”.

wholly crap.

um…wow.

meet Whatshisname, a UK artist/designer. his subversive canine lamps were designed for London’s Art Below exhibition, but were dubbed too offensive to be shown. (i think they’re quite clever.)

curtains, please.

speechless.

this is the entry door of a diamond merchant’s home in Surat, India, designed by Matharoo Associates. according to various sources, it’s made of 40 sections of 10-inch thick Burmese teak stacked to form an impressive and imposing 17-foot high, 5.5 foot wide “curtain door“, while 160 pulleys, 80 ball-bearings, a wire rope and a hidden counter-weight on a single pivot bring it to life. although there are some concerns over the use of teak (many fear the wood is becoming endangered), there’s no denying this door is an artistic and engineering beauty…
