white linen night in the heights – 2013.

i’m so glad i stumbled across news about white linen night in the heights, and doubly pleased to find out my friend julie was an event veteran!

with her as my guide, she and two additional friends of mine, michelle + justin, sashayed our way up and down white oak dr in the houston heights. we perused art, imbibed, and sampled home-made treats, including some very tasty BBQ courtesy of newly minted oak leaf smokehouse.

a great crowd and good food made for a grand ‘ol time.

(…once again, apologies for the reliance on a cell phone camera!)

houston restaurant week – 2013.

houstonians, shine your silver.

yesterday marked day 1 of the 11th annual Houston Restaurant Weeks – since it’s inception in 2003, local area restaurants have dedicated a week to donating a portion of their profits to the Houston Food Bank (as well as the Montgomery County and Galveston Food Banks this year).

This year, the city-wide charity dining event is from August 1 through September 2, 2013; you can find a list if participating restaurants or search by menu, cuisine, neighborhood, or even meal (ex. breakfast) via the Houston Restaurant Weeks main site.

Here’s how it works:

according to a KUHF news radio excerpt i heard, Brian Greene, CEO of the Houston Food Bank stated, “There’s over 170 restaurants that are participating and most of them are doing a $35 prix fixe [price fixed] three-course menu, some of them have a $45 dollar version and the food bank gets $5 or $7 of that. So you get a great dinner. So this is basically Houston’s best restaurants showing off.”

Houston Restaurant Weeks used to be only a week long when it first started in ’03, and raised $5,000. Last year, it managed to raise $1.2 million for the Houston Food Bank – here’s to record-breaking and full bellies for everyone!

madewell.

oh dear, i’m in trouble now.

i’ve already been very good at visiting my favorite stores at the [houston] galleria in moderation, but on what was supposed to be a quick drop to make a return, i discovered that madewell had finally opened their galleria location. crap. in the end, i think i showed considerable restraint, ending up at home with these babies…

cards against humanity.

this clever card game just ate Apples to Apples for lunch.

who knew hilarity would ensue when i went to spend an evening with some old college friends? someone pulled out Cards Against Humanity, and soon we were all red-faced and doing our best to keep our seats, much less not  spit beer out at each other. so impressed was i that i just bought my own deck via Amazon – CAH allows players-to-be to print their own cards from the site for free, but for $25, why not share the love and fiendish joy with the creators…

happily, no beer was harmed or wasted in the playing of this game.

puppies for breakfast.

jenga and i attended Puppies for Breakfast last weekend and had a blast!

i was surprised and impressed at how many breeds were represented… from dachshunds to german shepherds to cocker spaniels to large breed poodles and even some pointers, and i think i saw a finnish spitz! here are some of the belated pictures we (jenga gets credit for being my sometimes tripod quadripod) snapped, as promised – see the whole set on Flickr.

unspeakable cruelty.

OH MY GOD.

Just heard this story on news radio and had to pull over to share it. These sub human beasts should be thrown into a pit of vipers.

How can this be protected by the First Amendment?! The First Amendment protects speech, NOT conduct. The Founding Fathers would be weeping if they knew one of the most important protections we have was used to shield these disgusting sadists. They should be charged with animal cruelty, obscenity, and whatever else can be thrown at them. What a frightening, heartbreaking absence of empathy.

If people can treat animals like this and not be deservedly punished, I shudder to think of how we are going to improve the general safety of our country when it comes to preventing violence and getting justice for the wronged. In light of the recent tragedies in Boston and West, TX, this is just another disheartening low.

Please read ahead with caution; not for the faint of heart.

2013: day one.

hello,  2013…

i got to spend the last day of 2012 with some old friends from college [Texas A&M] – how can you go wrong with good friends and home cooking? although the night started off with us catching up on news of jobs + mortgages, which of our fellow Aggies were married or engaged and lamenting our inescapable aging, we eventually shook off the cobwebs and summoned our creaky old bones to have fun like the good ol’ days.

here’s to another new year!

introducing… rocky + bear.

jenga had a play date with rocky + bear today.

rocky + bear belong to my good friend michael and his girlfriend ruby. jenga hadn’t seen rocky for a few years and had never met bear, so suffice it to say, the hour was spent grumbling, sniffing, circling, and finally, the two little ones and the one big one giving each other wide berth. oh well… here’s to laying a good foundation for next time!
